Misogyny and Sports

By Katy Coakley

Across the country and around the world, sports are very popular for people to play. You are allowed to play whatever you want, but there is unfairness. That’s where the unfortunate word misogyny comes in. Misogyny is defined as discrimination and hate towards women. Women do not get enough representations in the fields that they enjoy. Sports is one of the main areas that women are struggling to fit in because of male dominance and inclusivity. Women athletes have even stated in surveys that over 65% of them have experienced sexism and only 10% of them are willing to confront the situations that they encounter. Female sports journalists and women in sports media are also treated unequally and feel that there needs to be a change.

Gender gaps are in sports, but not many people are aware of how badly it affects women. According to Nieman Reports, women’s sports participation is only 4% of the media coverage and only three stories have been reported on female players for the Minneapolis Star Tribune. The sports media is extremely controlled by males because 90% of the editors and 87% of the reporters are men. Marathon runner Kathrine Switzer became the first woman to run for the Boston Marathon in 1967. Sadly, she was hurt by Jock Semple as he was trying to grab her and take her bib number off, but was defended by her boyfriend and finished the race on her own. Additionally, the WNBA focused 95% of the sports content to spotlight men and only has 40% or less of women being sports participants.

Being paid is a major aspect of your life because going to work and earning money can help you throughout your life. Pay gap is not being fixed enough and there are ways of how women are not getting paid equally and men are being paid more. Adelphi University states that the average of American women earn 81% of what a man can make, but basketball has about $8 million dollars for the total of male players and around $75,000 for female players. Money lists for sports shows that men make around $127 million dollars a year for golf while women get paid around $2 million dollars a year. The final example would be using the information from the World Cup in 2015 when male athletes made $76,000 when women make $15,000. Men, who were going to play in the World Cup, stated from organizations that they would be receiving $9 million dollars and the women would be getting $1 million dollars.

Sports journalism still shows constant misogyny for women because it states that 90% of the anchors, commentators, and editors are largely and mainly male. While many see women trying to become athletes, commentators focus on the emotions of women and believe that they do not belong in sports because they are too weak. Sports journalist Lesley Visser stated that she was shut out of the press box because she was a woman and told Quartz: “I go to the NFC Championship, and in the press box there are maybe three women out of 2,000 credentials.” Social media is pretty hurtful when it comes to female sports journalists by offensive posts. Misogyny may happen still, but there are ways where we can come together and end it.

The Study Of Sports Science

By Katy Coakley

Playing sports gives people something new to try in their lives. Whether it’s baseball or tennis, there are so many types of sports to choose from. They give you good exercise, but did you know that science plays a huge impact on sports? That’s where the definition of sports science comes into play. Sports science is described as the study of how the healthy parts of the human body work by exercise. Sports and physical activities are shown in the areas of health and performance based on the sport that you are playing.

According to sports scientists, high tech is often used when it comes to studying athletes. Multiple 3D cameras are set up to capture how people move when they are playing sports such as basketball. They pay close attention to the monitor pressures, movements, and accelerations. We can also go back to the origins of sports science. Going all the way back to the first Olympic Games from 776 BC in ancient Greece, a Greek physician and philosopher, Galen, was writing numerous essays on proper nutrition, aerobic fitness, and muscle strengthening.

However, specialist Dr. Jack Groppel states that sports science could be used for discipline. This was happening in specific countries and nations such as the former Soviet Union and other Eastern European countries. It was starting to lead scientists to do research on physics to see the movements and principles in exercise and behavior. By the 1960s, both sports and science were becoming more admired in the United States, but many investigated phenomena that were related to kinds of science.

When it comes to studying this specific science, the main keys that are to be understood are psychology, physiology, biometrics, and motor control/learning. While some might not be interested in this sport, it can actually prevent injuries. Many injuries can be kept away through strong knowledge. Some ways can include stretching, warming up and cooling down, proper training, and good nutrition. Good nutrition is very important because “consultants can talk to you about the proper nutrition for your workout, your goals and your physiology.” Furthermore, stretching before and after a workout can prevent injuries, but ineffective stretching can cause major damage.

In conclusion, sports science is captivating to learn about because it makes sure that athletes are doing well with current training protocols, testing, and preparation. Other reasons can be that it can improve our health and save our work from arduous environments. For those of you who love sports or science, this a topic that you will want to consider researching.

Bowling in the Time of COVID-19

By Bella Gamboa

The coronavirus has made every aspect of life uncharted territory. Restaurants, churches, stores, gatherings, and sports have been affected. Once the region is put under the label of “Tier 2”, a season can take place for a low/mid risk sport. This year’s bowling season has adapted in order to remain safe during this time of crisis. Bowling is classified as a low risk sport; however, there have been many changes to the regular season.

“I’m very grateful we have the opportunity to even bowl at all this year. It has its pros and cons but overall it’s awesome to get out of the house, see everyone, and be a team again.” -Valeria

(pictured standing in the center)

Every practice/game when the team members arrive, their temperatures are taken immediately and they are provided with hand sanitizer. The girls must record their temperature into the system and they must answer some questions regarding how they feel on that single day. Through this we can track symptoms and keep everyone safe. Once the bowlers have done this they may put on their bowling shoes and put their bowling balls in the rack. Throughout the entirety of the practice/game the players and coaches wear masks, this includes during playing time. For every pair of lanes there are only 6 girls allowed. This is a big difference from the regular season’s 10 girls per pair of lanes.

“I am super happy that we are able to have some type of a bowling season. I am sad that we were not able to have tournaments almost every Saturday like last year. I wish we were able to see what our opponents' scores were while we are bowling a match because this helped us get competitive. But I am happy that we are able to bowl. ”

-Mia

(pictured standing in the center- right)

As far as games go, the team is only allowed to bowl within their conference and they bowl uncontested. This means that the team bowls in their “home alley” and the opposing team bowls in theirs. Both teams compare scores virtually, the day of the game. There is no traveling to opposing lanes, ever. All tournaments have been cancelled because the bowling alley does not have enough room to properly social distance the teams. This is a large difference from last year’s season where tournaments were frequent on Saturdays.

“I think that it’s kinda sad that we can’t have a normal season, but I am glad we get to have some sort of season however different it is... ” -Mackenzie

(pictured kneeling in the back left)

Throughout the season the girls have remained grateful. Despite the many changes, they have been happy to play. The scores have been agreeing with their smiles and the season is looking bright for Resurrection’s bowlers!

5 Unusual Facts About Swimming

By Katy Coakley

Swimming is one of the most popular sports in America and around the world. Many love to swim as a sport, but many like to swim for fun! However, swimming is an interesting sport with some absorbing facts that you might not know about. If you love swimming, then you’re going to learn about 5 facts about the sport. Let’s dive in!

  1. The first swimming goggles were actually made from tortoise shells. According to Simply Swim UK, the first known goggles were invented in Persia during the 14th century. They were also made from tortoise shells that were used by pearl divers. Even today, they have remained popular for two centuries in the Middle East. There is other evidence that the goggles are imported from Europe.

  2. Women were not allowed to join the Olympics until 1912. Swimming first became an Olympic sport in 1908, but women were not allowed to participate in swimming. This stereotype ended in 1912 when they finally let women join the Olympics. Fanny Durack, an Australian swimmer, became the first woman to win a gold meal during the games the same year.

  3. Freedivers are able to hold their breath for more than 10 minutes. Many people can hold their breath for about a few seconds. However, if you are properly trained, then you are able to hold your breath for about 2 minutes. Freediving is defined as “a form of underwater diving that relies on breath-holding until resurfacing rather than the use of breathing apparatus such as scuba gear.” Freedivers can hold their breath for 10 minutes or longer. The longest breath-holding period is 24 minutes and 3 seconds.

  4. Swimmers are able to flex their toes to the ground. Swimmers need to be flexible in order to swim properly and safely. However, there is a strong flexibility in swimmers’ feet and ankles. According to Nature, it “allows a smooth surface to be created for water to rush by, reducing drag.” It’s one of the reasons why you are able to see pointed toes in swimming, especially with competitions.

  5. Swimming burns more calories than biking and running. If you swim for about an hour, you are able to burn up to 784 calories or more. However, this can depend on the stroke. According to different studies, biking can only burn up to 483 calories per hour and running up to 557 calories per hour. This is based on using all of your body parts for fighting water resistance.

Swimming in the Course of a Pandemic

By Bella Gamboa

Swimming this year at Resurrection was an adventure! Swimming is a team sport. As a team you have to create a bond, you have to trust each other. It is all about strength, support, focus, and determination.

At the beginning of the season, the coaches had to break up the swimming practices into three separate, one hour, practices. It separated the swimmers and made it difficult for them to get to know each other and be a unified team element. They had a lot of new swimmers, which made things even more fun, new, and exciting. Eventually there was permission granted to bring the swimmers back together again for one practice.

They limited the number of girls per swimming lane and practiced social distancing. They wore a mask all the time, except when they entered the water. The girls continued to learn and grow. They learned how to come together (six feet apart) and combine their skills. The coaches were very proud and impressed with how the girls handled the situation. They expressed how the team was very hard working and committed as well as how the team worked well with each other in the process.

“Swimming during the pandemic was an entirely new experience this year!” -Head Coach Nicole Foley

Of course, their swim meets were altered too! Their invitational swim meets and relay races were cancelled. Invitational swim meets are when every weekend the team would swim against multiple schools and various teams with a variety of fun swimming challenges (synchronized swimming competitions, etc.). Relay races are when four swimmers raced against each other. Relay races were the team’s favorite part of the swim meet. It was really unfortunate that they couldn’t have these experiences. Nevertheless, they remained joyous and grateful. They realized it was a privilege that they were able to go to sports safely, considering the circumstances.

“Even though the year was different, it was really rewarding to be able to swim and be with the team, after all the months of quarantine. It made this different school year feel more normal!”

-Spirit captain, Isabella Martinelli

At the end of the season, the conference and swim meets were entirely different! They followed the social distancing requirements, which meant all the teams had to split up locations. They had the meets live streaming at all the locations, at the same time! The sectional meets of the swim team were held at East Leyden High School. There, they separated all the teams in the school gym, which allowed much more people to be there. There was a 50 person maximum on the pool deck, due to the circumstances. All the swimmers waited in the gym until it was their turn to race. Once it was their time, they were led into the pool one race at a time. Sadly the girls couldn’t watch each other, live, and cheer each other on, but they were very grateful to have the opportunity to swim. The team had a lot of fun and they were very thankful that their season was not postponed or cancelled. This pandemic only made the swimmers realize how much more they enjoyed swimming as a team.

Cross Country Update

By Julia Gamboa

The cross country team is finishing off their season soon! They have been practicing two times a week as a team and the other days of the week they run at home. Their practices usually take place on the Resurrection campus, but sometimes they will run to nearby locations. They typically run 3-5 miles in practices to prepare for the meet. The meets occur every Saturday for both varsity and junior varsity teams and they run a total of 3 miles.

During the pandemic, there have been slight changes to how they practice, how often they practice, and the certain precautions that have to be taken when around each other. One junior varsity runner said, “It is honestly really difficult this year because we do not have as many practices and there are so many precautions being taken that make things a little more challenging. For example, after a warm-up, masks have to go on and we have to be really far away from each other. Being away from the other runners can be challenging because as a runner I usually go with people to keep my pace. By now everyone has gotten used to the new adjustments and we are working hard.”

All runners are doing a great job, and their season will end by October 24th!

An Update on This Year's Basketball Season

By Julia Gamboa

During July, the Resurrection basketball team invited incoming freshman and returning players to attend workouts. These workouts took place at an outdoor basketball court in a social distanced environment. The team worked on conditioning, agility, and exercised their fundamentals. Also, the coaches paired all players up in virtual groups and had them report their mile times three times a week through email. Lastly, coaches sent a list of at-home drills that players can use to improve themselves.

This was a great way to adjust to COVID-19 and still have players improving for the winter season! Although the basketball team was not able to play summer league, all players are striving to get better for the winter season. Coaches and players are continuing to look forward to tryouts on November 16th!

Resurrection vs. Saint Laurence

By Meg Riordan

This past Thursday (January 16th, 2020) the JV basketball team went against Saint Laurence High School. The game was very close. The first five starters in the game were sophomores Jocelyn Fleming, Nora Ryan, Murphy Killion, Sydney Janus, and Freshman Lileigh Walsh. Their warm-ups were very interesting for seeing how they prepare as a team.

The first basket in the game was made by #23, Jocelyn Fleming. In the second quarter, the scores were really close to each other. The last basket was made by #22, Nora Ryan, which put Res in the lead for the third quarter.

During halftime, the Varsity basketball team was warming up for their game to come. The third quarter went really fast, and in the fourth quarter #12, Lileigh Walsh, had to do two separate free throws. The game was very exciting, and the final score was Resurrection 40 and Saint Lawrence 37. This may not have been the most hectic game of the year, but it was junior bandit night, which meant they were promoting Resurrection. The determination of the girls made their victory feel all the better.

A Word from Orchesis!

By Maddie O'Neil

Orchesis is a year round sport, which means it’s a big commitment, but it’s worth it in the end. We have our Christmas Show coming up this Friday the 6th, and we also have the Spring Show in May. It takes a lot of work to memorize dances the whole semester, but it’s to make sure they are absolutely perfect by the show. We also dance at pep rallies- we normally do the school fight song and another routine that is in the show.

We hold our tryouts at the beginning of the year, normally within the first few weeks of school. Depending on how many girls try out, there may be cuts, but there are normally little to none. Trust me, we are always looking for new talent to join the team. There are two teams, JV and Varsity, so there is a spot for everyone. Which team you make depends entirely on your skill level and your ability to pick up dances.

One thing I’ve realized that is great about being on the team is the friendships you make. You are always being supported by your fellow “Orchesisters” and everyone is really welcoming. I can always count on the other girls and that is a great feeling.

The dance styles we do vary and can be very different at times. There are upbeat and fast paced dances, which are the ones we normally do at pep rallies. We also do more slow dances, which are called contemporary and lyrical, and these typically require a lot of emotion. Personally, I enjoy those a lot more, because you’re telling a story. These two styles are probably our most popular, but we also do tap and hip hop.

I hope I have swayed some girls to try out next year. It really is a good way to have an after school activity, make friends, and express yourself if you really enjoy dance. If dance maybe isn’t for you, that’s okay! We love seeing support at our shows, so hopefully you’ll come to see us perform this week!

Stanley Cup Predictions

By Maddy Cotter

Playoffs are starting, meaning there will be a lot of talk about who will choke and who will win the Stanley Cup. I've done a bracket myself, which I'm pretty sure is going to fail. Tampa Bay is the first place team in the league this year, but they lost the current series 3-0 to Columbus. New York leads 3-0 against Pittsburg, Saint Louis leads 2-1 against Winnipeg, Vegas beat San Jose 2-1, Toronto leads the series against Boston 2-1, Washington won 2-1 against Carolina ("Back To Back" - T.J. Oshie), Nashville won against Dallas 2-1, and Colorado led the series against Calgary 2-1.

With some of the teams' first rounds coming to an end, now it's time to talk about the bracket. Tampa Bay was first in the league for most of the regular season and was awarded the President's Trophy. They're bound to win the Stanley Cup, but Columbus is currently winning the series 3-0.

San Jose's Joe Thornton is suspended for the game against Vegas, and Nazem Kadri of the Toronto Maple Leafs is suspended for the rest of round one due to cross-checks at Boston's Jake DeBrusk.

Also, the NHL is doing the annual playoff bracket challenge. Basically, you want to correctly predict who wins each round and how many games they will win that round. Although the money award is for 21+ contestants, you can still do bracket challenges with your friends. Good Luck!

Resurrection Bowling: An Interview with Janna George

By Giovanna Dante

The Resurrection bowling team is an unstoppable force to be reckoned with. The 2018-2019 season has been extremely successful for our Varsity Bandits. The Bandits have had an undefeated season. They beat teams such as Loyola, Trinity, and our rivals, Regina. With that being said, they had the opportunity to finish with a bang at the regionals, and they took it all. Not only did they blow over the competition at regionals, but Janna George, Valeria Colin, Samantha Dahlstrom, and Samantha Stefanski were also recognized for their talent and were named all-conference bowlers.

Senior bowler Janna George will be taking our Bandit pride to State. She says, “I have been a member of the varsity bowling team for two years, and it has been nothing but great. I have made countless friendships and memories that I will never forget. Before I joined, I remember even noticing how closely knit the team was, but being a part of it is a completely different experience. Your teammates become some of your best friends, no matter what year in school they are.

"No words can fully describe what it is like to be on such a team, with coaches who devote their time and energy to be right there with you during the highs and the lows. I have learned how to be mentally tough and persevere when something does not go my way, and how to be a support for my teammates when they need to be picked up. The most disappointing part, though, is the lack of recognition we receive. We are small but mighty, but I do feel that bowling has some sort of stigma around it.

"Over the past years, our team has accomplished many impressive feats, some of which I have been lucky enough to contribute to. The team has been titled GCAC Champion in the years '07, '08, '09, '10, '11, '12, '13, '14, '16, '17, '18, and '19. But that is not all... They have been awarded the title of Regional Champs in the years '15, '16, '17, and '19. Winning this year's regional was perhaps one of the highlights of my career as an athlete, and the team has gone to the State Finals in '10, '14, '16, and '17, and now I am lucky enough to represent our Resurrection Bandits at the State Final as an individual, which has been a goal of mine.

"I am beyond ecstatic to have earned such an opportunity, and I am looking forward to showing everyone what we Bandits are made of... On the other hand, it is very saddening that my season is coming to a close. I can never quite thank Coach Clark and Coach King for all that they have done for me as both an athlete and a person, and the way that they have helped me to better myself. They are the true definitions of Resurrection's Finest, and Resurrection is extremely lucky to have such wonderful people and coaches as part of the Bandit Family.”

As you can see, we have nothing but pride, sportsmanship, spirit, athleticism, and positive attitudes coming from this group of very talented girls. Congratulations to our bowling Bandits!

Thoughts on the NHL

By Maddy Cotter

The National Hockey League (NHL) started in 1917 in Canada. It has evolved since then, from the Chicago Blackhawks, to the Philadelphia Flyers and the Florida Panthers.

From the All-Stars game to the Stanley Cup, hockey has been a part of people's lives nationwide, whether they are playing or just watching the Good Old Hockey Game. Currently, there are 31 teams in the league, with 7 of those teams from Canada.

It's 2019, people: we gotta watch more hockey. Every hockey fanatic checks the standings every day to see if their favorite team went down or stayed the same. Well, that's me. I check the standing every day. No one cares about the wild card standings, so we don't really think about that until 1 week before playoffs. But the league standings are important... like, VERY important.

But, let's start talking some playoffs predictions. The Tampa Bay Lightning have kept their number one spot on the league rankings for quite a while. Calgary fought their way to the number two spot in the league rankings and Winnipeg Jets to the number three spot (as of 1/22/19 ). Not bad, Tampa, not bad. Tampa Bay are most likely going to make the playoffs. The track they are on, they could even win the Stanley Cup. But who would face them?

A new rumor has evolved: that Patrick Kane is being traded. In my opinion, if the Blackhawks traded Kane, they would be losing one of their best players. I went to the game a couple of weeks ago against the Predators. The whole team didn't seem into the game, but this doesn't mean one game should affect their future playing style.

If they miss chances, they miss them. Everyone has bad games, and that's for anyone who plays sports. Corey Crawford, goaltender number 50, is coming back from a concussion, thankfully. Brendan Perlini, rightwing, is out due to a concussion.

But, it's still the Good Old Hockey Game. You CAN complain about it. Yeah, we all have superstitions, like how Tyler Seguin has to be the last man off the ice between both teams, or how players stack the warm-up pucks in cool designs. But, complain. Every player is different in their own way.

Bears Vs. Eagles Recap

By Maddy Cotter

The Bears faced the Eagles for the wildcard game on Sunday, January 6. If any of you heard, they lost the game. And yes, the kicker hit the post.

The Eagles had many complete passes in the first quarter, and the first pass and down were in favor of the Eagles. Both teams had incomplete throws and punts. The score at the end of the 1st quarter was 3-0 in favor of the Eagles.

Cody Parkey had a complete field goal from 36 yards away in the 2nd quarter, making the score tied at 3 for both teams. Cody Parkey had another completed field goal with 3 seconds left in the 2nd quarter, from 29 yards away, making the score 6-3 in favor of the Bears.

Later, Cody Parkey made yet another field goal from 34 yards away, making the score 10-9, still in favor of the Eagles. A complete touchdown for the Bears late in the 4th quarter made the score 15-10 in favor of the Bears. With 56 seconds left in the 4th quarter, the Eagles managed to get a touchdown, making the game 16-15 in favor of the Eagles.

With 10 seconds left in the game, Cody Parkey was up to make a field goal from 43 yards away but sadly hit the upright and then the post. This loss was a major upset for the Bears this season.

Both teams played well, with many complete passes, touchdowns, and field goals. There were also some incomplete passes, sacks, and flags. Since the Eagles won the wildcard game, they will be facing the New Orleans Saints on January 13th.

On the other side of the bracket, the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Chargers face-off on January 13th.

Varsity Basketball Roundup: Resurrection Vs. Regina

By Meagan Riordan

On Thursday, December 13th, Resurrection College Prep played against Regina Dominican College Prep. The five Res starters for the Varsity game were Madison Dorband, Kellie Forrestal, Gabby O’Hehir, Bridget Kovac, and Annie Quinn.

During the first quarter, Madison Dorband made a three-pointer nearly at half-court. The final score of the first quarter was Res 9, Regina 5. During the second quarter, one of the players got the ball stuck on the backboard, and one of the girls from Regina got a nosebleed and had to sit out. Res led the second quarter 14-9.

At halftime, they threw out t-shirts and chips to the crowd and had a knockout game going on. The game was tied almost all the way through the third quarter. The score at the end was Res 23, Regina 21. In the final quarter, Res really stepped up their game and pulled out the win with an outstanding score of 42-27!
