"To the Class of 2021"

By Katy Coakley

As our journey almost comes to an end at Resurrection, the Class of 2021 has truly had some amazing memories. From the first moment we stepped into the building on our freshman orientation to attending our new classes and meeting teachers, these are the moments that have changed our lives. Some of us graduated from the same grammar school, while others came from different places, but what matters the most is that we are one big Res family. Resurrection gave us opportunities to meet new people, try new clubs or go on new adventures. We have all worked hard to get where we are and now we are about to begin a next chapter in our lives: college.

College is a huge step in our lives as it leads us into choosing our new career paths and planning out other events in the future. However, graduating from high school is an enormous accomplishment, and it’s an honor to learn something new everyday. While graduating from high school might be difficult this year, that doesn’t mean we can't celebrate what we have earned. We should all be proud of what we have done over the last four years, and this class is very important and committed. The whole staff at Resurrection has supported us along the way and they have helped us come all this way to graduating. Our families have played a major role as well by getting us to school on time, taking us to practice, or helping us with certain assignments.

Friends are a huge part of the school. When we were all able to go back to school in August, we were excited to see one another, but we were separated in specific cohorts. However, we managed to see each other during Zoom calls or free time. They depend on each other during tough times and seem to always have the right piece of advice. Going on retreats brought us together to become closer to our friendships, but also to our faith. God has helped throughout our whole lives because he is there for us when we need him. If we are having a hard time, you will have to turn to Resurrection. While we may have many thoughts about what is going to happen during our last few months at school, there will be happiness and excitement coming up as you lead towards prom and graduation.

While we may be graduating on May 27th this year, we should be able to thank the teachers of our school. They are the ones who have worked tirelessly to come up with ideas and safe events for the Class of 2021. From our senior shirts to an outdoor tailgate party, these are the coolest moments from this year that will be awesome treasures for our class. Going back to normal life might take a while, but we know that it will happen soon. This whole pandemic has changed our lives, but I know that we will get through this together as a class and as a family. We are powerful and we can honor what we have done throughout our four years at Resurrection. As Winston Churchill once said: “Never give up on something that you can’t go a day without thinking about.” Hats off to the Class of 2021!

"10 Facts You Didn't Know About Ms. Schneider"

By Katy Coakley

Reading has been a subject of interest for many people. Books help us learn about new characters and worlds, but they don’t have to be fictional. You can find all kinds of books at the library, but you would want to get awesome advice on them from Ms. Schneider, the school’s librarian. She has been the librarian for a long time, but there are things that you may not know about her. Let’s take a look at the fun facts about Ms. Schneider!

  1. She has played librarian ever since she was little. Since she was very young, Ms. Schneider has always loved to play librarian. During our interview together, she stated that she would always collect many books and told me that her personal books would be her library books. Ms. Schneider stated that she would stamp them and organize them on her own.

  2. She was an English teacher. Before she became a librarian, Ms. Schneider worked as an English teacher for about nine years. However, she decided to do something different and that’s when she decided to go to library school!

"Get To Know a Teacher: Señorita Zajack"

16 November 2020

By Katy Coakley

Señorita Zajack may be a Spanish teacher at Resurrection, but there are interesting and fun facts that you wouldn’t know about her. She teaches Honors Spanish 1, Spanish 1, and Spanish 2. At first, she stated that she wasn’t interested in the language until she was a senior in high school. She felt that Spanish was fun for her and that there weren’t many issues with the classes she took. An interesting fact is that Resurrection’s principal, Dr. Piwowarski, taught Señorita Zajack during her senior year at her high school. He taught her Spanish 4 and the two got along very well.

However, she first started to learn Spanish when she was a freshman because she didn’t have much experience with Spanish during elementary and middle school. Another fun fact is that her mom was born in Italy and she began to have a strong interest in foreign languages. She did state that her mom never taught her Italian because she moved to the United States when she was very young, but she wished she would have in order to get used to another language. She attended Marist High School, a private Catholic school, on the South Side and graduated from there in 2012. She also attended Illinois State University and has a Master’s Degree from St. Xavier University. Señorita Zajack took cultural classes as well.

When she was looking for jobs, Dr. P reached out to her and said that there was going to be an opening for her. After looking at different schools including public, she decided to come to Res to teach. Señorita Zajack has done some amazing traveling by going to Spanish speaking countries such as Spain and Mexico. She did her studies at the University of Salamanca, located west of Madrid and stayed with a host family for study abroad. She wants to visit Italy because of her Italian roots, her mom being from there, and the food. She also has an interest in visiting Argentina. Important advice that Señorita Zajack wants students to take away from her class is that she wants them to be comfortable with trying something new and she wants them to learn from their mistakes.

I was able to ask Señorita Zajack fun questions about herself. She loves to spend time with her friends and family. She goes back to the South Side to visit her parents and she is close with her two nephews, sister-in-law and brother. Her favorite meal of the day is dinner because she enjoys cooking and loves to cook at home. She is a big fan of Italian food, especially pasta. She loves watching different types of TV Shows. Señorita Zajack loves watching reality TV such as The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. She also likes This is Us, Dexter, The Office, Modern Family, The Sopranos, and is a huge Game of Thrones fan. During her free time, she spends a lot of time cooking and exercising at the gym. She loves spending time creating new ideas and activities for her classes.

Señorita Zajack likes movies with certain actors such as Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper. She loves the Batman movies, Silver Linings Playbook, and Liar Liar with Jim Carrey. To Señorita Zajack, the best way to relax is by listening to music, lighting a candle, or sitting out in the sun. She likes Dave Matthews Band and has gone to many of their concerts. Her favorite holiday is Christmas and she loves making cookies with her mom and going to midnight mass. She also wraps a lot of presents for the holiday and loves reading magazines. Señorita Zajack wants everyone to stay positive and to stay safe!

"Meet the New Faculty: Ms. Cabral"

15 October 2020

By Bella Gamboa

Ms. Cabral is the new Spanish teacher here at Res! She teaches Spanish 1, Honors Spanish 1, Honors Spanish 2, and Honors Spanish 3. She went to college at the University of Illinois in Chicago. In her senior year of high school at Rolling Meadows (District 214), she was a part of a selective group of students, called Education Academy, where she shadowed teachers, learned teaching methods, and practiced teaching for over 200 hours herself. She studied nursing for a period of time and realized her real passion was to become a teacher.

She wants to teach because she wants to help the youth and give them a voice. She believes that all students and people should have a voice and be able to advocate for themselves. She chose to teach Spanish because she has been fluent in Spanish since the age of 5. Fun fact! She also speaks Tagalog and English, of course. She is not a native Spanish speaker. She is also not of Latino and/or Hispanic descent, she is actually Filipino American. She learned Spanish because she grew up having Latino and Hispanic friends as a child.

Ms. Cabral graduated from UIC in December 2019. She graduated early because of the amount of AP classes she took in high school. After she graduated high school, she returned to Rolling Meadows, as an alumna to be a teaching assistant. She worked with the AVID program, where she supported first generation college students to pursue whichever post-secondary education they wanted. Because of her experiences with AP classes, she believes that AP classes challenge you and help you to be better students. With her knowledge of AP class benefits, she incorporates AP style activities in her teaching. She introduces AP style activities to better prepare her students for gaining fluency and comprehension in Spanish.

As a teacher she wants to create a safe, fun, and healthy environment for her students so they can learn as well as be themselves! Ms. Cabral likes to paint, write poems, drink bubble tea, and go to concerts in her free time. This is one of the reasons why she is an impeccable writer! She uses art as a fun hobby and as a way of expressing herself. She encourages everyone to find something to have fun with and grow with: a skill, hobby, sport, activity, etc. She encourages speaking about mental health and helping others. She wants to make life better for her students by spreading smiles and kindness! She believes that we should all respect each other. She makes sure that it is clear that discrimination and hate have NO PLACE in her classroom. Diversity is celebrated in Ms. Cabral’s classroom! She believes that diversity is what should bring us together because we are all different!

Teaching is Ms. Cabral’s passion! She is understanding of the fact that students have many obligations outside of school. Because of this, she strives to help her students to the best of her ability. She makes sure that each student is focused on and makes it clear that guidance/extra help is always available and encouraged! She makes sure that as a teacher she is as supportive as possible. She tries to prepare her students and give them confidence for the world outside of school. She wants to help students figure out who they are and what they want to be. She tries to improve herself and her teaching methods all the time so that her students can receive the best education possible from her. There is no doubt that Ms. Cabral is the epitome of the word teacher!

"Resurrection Service in the Midst of a Pandemic"

28 September 2020

By Bella Gamboa

Resurrection is cooking up something different in terms of service this year! Due to the pandemic, service opportunities are hard to find, so Campus Ministry and the administration at Res have been thinking hard about what we can do as a school. Enter “Service Palooza”! Service Palooza is a week-long service “marathon” that leads up to the feast day of St. John Baptist de La Salle.

“Enter to learn, leave to serve” is right! This week we will focus on the Lasallian motto that we Res girls are now a part of. This event starts off the week with a Liturgy and ends with a “Service Fair.” More information on this exciting “Service Palooza” will be coming soon. Keep an eye out for dates and activities regarding this good deed marathon.

While attending school, she had many types of interests and her favorite subject was science because she found it to be enjoyable. She stated that it was tough managing everything including going to school, doing homework, hanging out with friends, and attending extracurricular activities, but she has always been organized.

Before coming to work at Resurrection, Ms. Masura worked as a guidance counselor at another school. She said that it was more of the position that brought her to Res and appreciates that part the best. She loves that her job is close to home and that she can be with her family. She likes talking with students about trying to find new universities and discussing plans of getting into colleges. Also, she loves exploring colleges, studying different careers, and learning from students and their perspectives. When it comes to looking at colleges, she had a few important tips. She loves spending time with her daughter and enjoys watching movies at home. She said that she likes to watch Disney+ every night and loves the movie Moana. Finally, Ms. Masura shared some important information with the Resurrection community. She stated that she has the experience and being a college counselor is her passion. She is there to help her students and she looks forward to meeting everyone.

"The Quaranteens"

27 May 2020

By Anna Rafac

When we start school at the age of 3, and go through 8 years of primary school, we look forward to graduating 8th grade and going off to high school. Always being told high school is where you find the people you will be friends with for the rest of your life. For me, high school was an all girls Catholic high school in Chicago. During the process of high school, you see that each year you not only change but you also get more and more excited for having the glory year of being a senior. I got to see all the years before me have the best times at their last homecoming, last pep rally, last sports game, then senior prom, and finally the last step: graduation.

For my year, the Class of 2020, ours turned out a bit different. I started my senior year

happy and preparing for college. As we got through our first 6 months this is really when things were becoming final. Second semester for all of us was prom, final sports games, and of course graduation. Around the middle of March we started to hear things about COVID-19 near our area. Not many of us thought much of it. We got out for a half day and a good portion of us were celebrating getting out early, not realizing how much we were taking it for granted.

When we started to hear more news that we would not be going back to school for two

weeks, we all were like, “Oh it's just two weeks, we will be back in no time.” All our classes switched to online. As COVID-19 got progressively worse, and the extension for going back kept getting pushed, we realized we weren’t going back at all to finish our senior year. That's when we realized those days would be the last time we walked the halls together, had class with a favorite teacher, and enjoyed being the seniors.

I am writing this not as a way to take away from the severity of COVID-19. I'm writing this to explain that we, as teenagers, have never experienced something this life changing. Most of us were born after 9/11 and have only seen the after effects and didn’t experience the heartache that so many did from such a big event. We are learning just like everyone else. It is probably not a big deal to people who aren't in our shoes, and I understand why: because there is a global pandemic going on. For us seniors, we worked so hard to have those final milestones, to finally finish and say we did it. I know it is a little thing that probably won’t mean much with so much more coming in life, but for us it is not being able to make the memories we could’ve had.

Our entire lives have changed during this time, our daily schedules are totally different, and we took online classes only to wonder: What’s next? Will we get to go to college in the fall? Will we always have to wear face masks for the rest of our lives? Will we find a vaccine? I can’t answer those questions, but all I can say is whatever happens, we will be stronger. We changed to follow the guidelines and learned new ways to have a “normal life." I know this may not be what we wanted, but I sure did learn about myself and about the world around me. Yes, we didn’t get to have our big finale, but we are history in the making. #Classof2020strong

A special feature from Ms. Ortiz's Spanish 3 class...

By Mary Grace Murphy

comidas estadounidenses usualmente tienen mantequilla.

"Spirit Week, 2019"

4 October 2019

By Giovanna Dante

Last week at Resurrection College Prep, the students celebrated a fun spirit week. On Monday, Freshman and Sophomores dressed as superheroes to take on the Juniors and Seniors who dressed as villains. To close up the Monday festivities, the Resurrection student body gathered in the gym for their fall pep rally. The fall pep rally included fun sibling games and dances created by each sports team.

On Tuesday the student body enjoyed a walk to the Pickwick Theater in Park Ridge for Walk-a-Thon. Seniors gathered in the parking lot early that morning for their Senior tailgate. Students then had a fantastic time watching the Wonder Woman movie with their friends. On Wednesday, Resurrection students wore pink to show off their spirit and received a noon dismissal. Thursday, students expressed a blast from the past by dressing up as their favorite decades. That night, students also enjoyed chanting and cheering for the Resurrection volleyball team as we played our rivals, Regina. Finally, on Friday students dressed with their favorite country's colors in order to conclude our spirit week.

Overall, Resurrection had an action-packed week, showing maximum spirit for the bandits!

"Resurrection Photography Contest: An Interview with Alyssa Amitrano"

By Meg Riordan

Resurrection College Prep recently had a contest for the best photograph by one of our students. The winner was senior Alyssa Amitrano. Her picture captured a feather falling from the air in a grazing motion on a beautiful, sunny day. I asked Alyssa a few questions about how she got into photography.

When asked how long she has been interested in photography, she simply said, “I’ve always been interested in art but did not become interested in photography until this year. I took a photography class first semester and found it to be an art with extreme precision. I never appreciated photography as an art form and looked at it in its fullest extent until I took the class.”

The amazing picture that Alyssa did was simply taken on an iPhone, but when she is taking more vibrant and more detailed pictures she uses a Canon Rebel t6 camera. Alyssa normally takes pictures of landscapes, but she also enjoys taking pictures of people and making them feel confident in the way they look.

When asked who inspires her, she said Annie Leibovitz because of her creativity, techniques, and composition. About her winning photograph, she said, “The photograph I chose to submit is one of the best photos I have ever taken, the composition is concise, and the feather appears as if it was floating.”

Why did Alyssa take the picture? She said, “I was completing an assignment for photography and saw that the feather landed on my windshield. I felt compelled to take out my phone and tap on the screen until the camera focused on the feather.”

Alyssa is a talented photographer, but that is not the only art that she does: “[I have] competed in several art shows throughout freshman and sophomore year and placed First at the Triton Art Show in 2016. I have created wire and clay sculptures, pencil drawings, acrylic paintings.” Not too many people can say they have done that!

Second place went to Kellie Forrestal, who submitted a photograph of a landscape at sunset. Congratulations Alyssa, and good job to the runners-up!

"State of the Art Band Festival and Midwest Music Festival"

By Reyna Galvez

On February 16th, 2019, the Notre Dame/Resurrection Band participated in the State of the Art Band Festival. The Festival took place at Brother Rice High School, where other Catholic high school bands would be participating in the event. Around eleven o’clock in the morning, the ND/Res Band arrived at Brother Rice High School for their performance that would take place at 1:45 p.m. The band got their instruments together for warm ups that would begin before the performance. In the warm up room, they made sure their instruments were in tune and had some extra practice on the pieces they would be performing. After warm ups, everyone filed into a single line to the gym. As the band was announced to perform, they sat in their seats, ready to perform. The ND/Res band performed the following pieces for the competition: Festivo and Marche Diabolique. The band performed well, earning a plaque for 3rd place and a trophy for Best Percussion in the competition.

The Notre Dame/Resurrection Band also competed in the Midwest Music Festival on February 23rd, 2019. The routine for the day was similar to the competition the band had attended the week before. They arrived, put their instruments together, warmed up, and went out to perform the same pieces, Festivo and Marche Diabolique. With a tough competition, including both public and catholic high schools, the band ended with a high score of 92. The Notre Dame/Resurrection Band has worked hard throughout their competition season and look forward to their upcoming competitions next school year.

"Why is it so important to eat breakfast in the morning?"

By Meg Riordan

Do you eat breakfast in the morning? Is it really important? Earlier this week, I asked my fellow students to take a survey on whether they eat breakfast or not in the morning. Of the 149 responses, about 54.9% like to eat breakfast and 45.1% do not like to eat breakfast. A lot of the people who say they don’t eat breakfast say that they don’t have enough time or that it’s too early in the morning to eat breakfast. People who say they do eat breakfast say they have cereal, granola bars, yogurt, etc.

Going without breakfast becomes more common as your age goes up. Drinking water in the morning is important. It’s hard to get 8 cups of water every day. In the morning, we tend to want water. Drinking a cup of water in the morning can wake you up and help get your day started. In the survey, I also asked if you drink water before lunch. 83.2% of people said they do drink water before lunch and 16.8% said they don’t drink water before lunch. In addition, drinking about 16 ounces of water at least 30 minutes before lunch will help with weight loss. Eating sugary foods in the morning can help boost your day so you have some type of sugar inside of you. When I asked about the sugar people eat in the morning, around 64% eat sugar in the morning and around 35% do not.

Eating breakfast is important in the morning. It gives you energy and can start your day right. Do you want to change your habits? It's not that hard to do. You can start by drinking a glass of water in the morning and eating something small: for example, fruit bars, bagels, or cheerios. A small breakfast can make all the difference in how you react to the world and how you will take on the day.

Meet the New Faculty: Ms. Davis

By Natalie Shamon

Ms. Davis grew up in Chicago, just 5 minutes away from Res, and she's lived in the same house since she was two. She grew up with her mom, dad, and sister, Heather, who is five and a half years older than her.

She attended Chicago Public Schools from pre-K to her senior year of high school. She went to Oriole Park and then transferred to Taft Academic Center for seventh and eighth grade. Because she was used to the school and gained high school credits from middle school at Taft, she stayed there for high school and absolutely loved it there.

She played softball for 9 years but decided to not pursue it anymore in middle school or high school. She is a huge Cubs fan and has a dog named Wrigley. Her favorite color is neon green, and her favorite food is steak and mashed potatoes. During high school and college, she worked at Jewel Osco as a Service Desk Manager for 7 years. She even worked there through student teaching.

Ms. Davis worked at Dominican University during the summer for three years while she was working on her undergraduate degree at their Summer Literacy Program. She loved the kids she worked with, and although she was considered a paraprofessional, the program leader decided she could be a one-on-one reading coach for her last two years. This role was only supposed to be for the graduate students they were working with, so she was honored to know that they trusted her with this responsibility.

She student taught here at Res last semester for the English department, and she subbed for Sr. Mary Ann in the Religion department for a month last year. This is her first full-time teaching gig, and she has been so blessed for the opportunity to be at Res. She is having so much fun teaching her classes this year, and every day is such a learning experience for both her and her students. She hopes to influence this future generation because she truly believes that these girls will change the world in such positive ways.

In high school, she was a reporter and editor for the school newspaper, and she was a state qualifier for editorial writing. She has won multiple writing contests that have allowed her to go to Washington, D.C. during her junior year and the University of Iowa for a journalism camp. She can honestly say that her love for English grew because of journalism and writing.

Because of her journalism adviser and her two amazing English teachers (she had one teacher for three years of English) at Taft, her passion for leadership also grew. These three individuals motivated her more than she could ever imagine, and she is forever grateful for them, which is what also pushed her into the teaching track in college. She hopes that in her own classroom she changes at least one of her students as much as these individuals have changed her. After her high school graduation, she visited them all the time; she still keeps in touch with them to this day.

As for college, she attended Dominican University and graduated in 2017 with her Bachelor's Degree in English; she was chosen by her professors as the Outstanding Senior for the English Department. Dominican was the first private school she had ever attended. She was on the education track during her entire time there because she knew she wanted to be a teacher since high school. Her mom always jokes that she knew Ms. Davis would be a teacher because when she was young, she would often line up all of her stuffed animals on her bed and teach them new things. God definitely had a plan for her, and she says that she didn't even know it at the time.

Meet the New Faculty: Mr. Wold

By Rose Haughey

Resurrection College Prep has a terrific mathematics department. This year, a new teacher has been added to the mix. Mr. Wold now teaches geometry and precalculus here at Res.

Growing up in Wheaton, IL with his parents and older brother, Mr. Wold developed a love for math. It wasn’t until high school that he was able to discover his talent.

Up until then math had never been easy for Mr. Wold, but having a great  geometry teacher helped him realize his potential. He was able to figure out and understand his school work and even decided to go into a profession in it. He is still in communication with the teacher who inspired him.

He attended private school as a kid. He also loved to explore the wooded area near his childhood home, where there was a prairie path that he would often walk. When he wasn’t outside, he was playing Dungeons and Dragons with his friends. His adventurous side continues to show when he goes indoor rock climbing with his family. He likes to share bits of his own childhood with his children, making them tacos like his mother used to make. In his spare time, he goes to book signings with his family.

After high school he went on to get his master's degree at Roosevelt University. He later took online courses at Western Governors University to receive his master's. Throughout high school and college he worked at a movie theater and a Dairy Queen.  After earning his degree, he packed up all his things and moved to Georgia to teach.

While in Georgia, he had a fourth grade class where he taught every subject. He stayed in Georgia for ten years, before moving back to Chicago. While studying, he worked as a T.A. at a high school and Ubered for extra money.

When he finished earning his highest degree, he was able to apply for a full time job teaching at a high school.  He debated public or private, and eventually decided on joining us here. He is glad to finally have his own classroom and to be able to teach what he loves: Geometry. Mr. Wold's enthusiasm for what he teaches benefits us all, and we are all ecstatic to have him here with us.

Something significant in Mr. Wold’s life is sign language. His wife is hard of hearing, so being able to communicate with her in an efficient way is important to him. He has started his own sign language club here at Resurrection to share that part of his life with us.

Meet the New Faculty: Mr. Miller

By Rose Haughey

Part of the well rounded education provided by Resurrection College Prep is the Athletics Department. This year, the department brought on a new member, Mr. Scott Miller. He currently teaches both Physical Education I and II, along with Learning Leadership and Health.

Mr. Miller grew up in Boone, IA, along with six brothers and sisters, and he has had a love for sports since then. In Boone, he got his first job working at his best friend’s parents' all-purpose gas station. Mr. Miller did a lot there: changing tires, checking air pressure and oil levels, and pumping gas. He attended the University of Iowa, later transferred to NIU, and eventually followed his wife to Chicago. While in Chicago, he worked at a fitness center for adults.

During his time at the fitness center, he realized he wanted to make a difference in people's lives. He thought that he could make the most change teaching at the high school level. Teaching multiple classes was also on his list, so the Phys Ed instructor position was perfect for him. He enjoys the uncertainty that each day brings. Being that Resurrection is on the smaller scale, he feels he can make more of a connection with his students than he would be able to at a bigger school. Although his favorite sport is football, Mr. Miller loves teaching his students other sports, particularly ones that the girls might not have heard of.

Mr. Miller has also had some life changing experiences outside of the gym. Traveling to

other countries has influenced his attitude towards the world. He is able to look at life with a different perspective and see new meanings to what surrounds him. In addition to traveling, he enjoys playing video games, both old and new. Mr. Miller wants to make a difference in his students' lives and appreciates each day he is able to influence the future generation.
